A strong Pharmacology section comprises contributions on a range of topics, including the East Asian paradox – Asians who have had percutaneous coronary intervention are at a lower risk of ischaemic events than Caucasians even though they have a higher platelet reactivity. Dr Doreen Tan examines the differences in outcomes between Caucasians and Asians, and discusses the plausibility that both platelet reactivity and gene testing could be used to inform holistic decision-making for all patients – irrespective of ethnicity.

Elsewhere, Mavrogeni et al. note that although non-invasive modalities perform well in cardiology, they are unable to diagnose the complex pathophysiology of autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The authors discuss the advantages of cardiovascular magnetic resonance in allowing early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and in prompting modifications of anti-rheumatic and cardiac treatment.

Koji Hasegawa, President of the International Society of Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy, presents a selection of best posters from the society’s 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting held in Kyoto in May.
